Hurricane Milton

Hurricane Milton

Prof. Dr. Cristiano Torres

Hurricane Milton caused significant damage in Florida, becoming one of the most powerful storms of 2024. It reached Category 5 with winds up to 180 mph (290 km/h), leading to severe flooding, home destruction, and leaving thousands without power. Milton resulted in at least 16 deaths, and many areas remain isolated as recovery efforts begin. Though it has since been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, its effects are still being felt in the region.

The storm’s scale in the Northern Hemisphere can be seen in this animation using 240 GOES-East satellite images (NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration), capturing its formation and dissipation over the past 40 hours, observed on October 9, 2024, at 14:10 UTC.
